Tsarevets Fortress

History of Tsarevets

Tsarevets is a medieval fortress and historical hill in Veliko Tarnovo, which was once the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1396). The ruins of the royal palace, the patriarchal complex, many churches, and houses can still be seen there. Today, Tsarevets is one of Bulgaria’s top tourist destinations and is part of the "Hundred National Tourist Sites". Visitors can explore the restored Patriarchal Church of the Ascension of the Lord and enjoy the "Sound and Light" show. The site offers a mix of rich history, impressive architecture, and cultural events like the medieval festival "Sacra Terra".
